City Pages' BLACKCLOUD STALLIONHEART Review

There are solo artists whose names appears on album covers even though a full band plays, and there are solo artists who make the songs their own, taking center stage and leaning on their own instrumentation and vocals to represent their work. Blackcloud Stallionheart, also known as Adam Burt (STNNNG, Total Fucking Blood, the Vets) is among the latter group. While Burt may be a veteran TC rocker, his Blackcloud Stallionheart moniker takes a new approach, bringing a contemplative and thoughtful artist instead of aggressive rock.
Beginning with the noisy instrumental title track, Burt quickly establishes an ambient, disjointed, and foreboding feel. As the opener bleeds into "Eternal Plamegate," the wandering licks and intermittent fingerpicking supply a more fluid, exploratory feel. With minimal vocals (all in Burt's tenor) and occasional rhythmic backing, the songwriting takes a personal, unadorned, and guitar-first approach. The lyricism adds to the already somber tone, and the music comes across as an atmospheric soundscape with guitar solos serving as the peaks and valleys. Blackcloud Stallionheart's songs craft moods by exploring the horizons and forcing unexpected turns rather than focusing on melody, hooks, or genre. 2009 is music to sit back and put your feet up to—it's thinkin' music, albeit with glimpses of humor and samples to lighten the mood. --LOREN GREEN

ADAM J. PATTERSON, BA: "recording of Variable Quality"

Above you can see the cover of our newest and eponymously-titled release, an abrasive, one-track, lo-fi-meets-macbook electronics meditation that was recorded, and manufactured in one afternoon before I took a shower and went out to play a show at the Bedlam Theater. I gave my copies away at the show, and it has been out-of-print since then. But now it's available on high quality CDr again for $3.00 through the mail.

The cover photo shows some cabbage toward the end of it's season out at Turnip Rock, our dear friends' farm in New Auburn, Wisconsin.

Ships in 2-3 business days.

CHARLEY LOWELL SMITH: dormitory monologues

During my freshman winter of 1995, I befriended the inimitable, Alaska-born Smith and frequently made recordings of his diatribes and free-form streams of conjecture at Bailey Hall on the U of MN's St. Paul campus.  These conversations took place in my dirty collegepunk dorm room .  Always a curious observer slash enquirer of the ol' human condition, and also a frank spewer of vitriol that spared no one, Charley has from the beginning been an enormous influence on my world-view (for better or worse).  For the dying-to-know only we've presented here the audio from some of our original meetings.  "Enjoy".

BLACKCLOUD STALLIONHEART: 2009

CD-R

"The 'solo effort' these days has become just another thing we've come to expect and promptly forget, like new kid's breakfast cereals. Guitarist Adam Burt (STNNNG, Total Fucking Blood, The Vets) however has coughed up something pretty super and original to lay into with his Blackcloud Stallionheart thang and debut disc, 2009

Appearing suddenly as an alarmingly curious songcrafter who deadpan baritones his way through simple hooks and lyrics, Burt's preoccupations seem to float around themes like mysticism, Old Testament name-checkin', science, and pop politics. His guitar playing, both acoustic and electric, would feel quite at home alongside a variety of other stylists at any given point on the 30 minute record (Ben Chasny, Richard Thompson, Joe Satriani, classic Popul Vuh's Conny Veit, and more song-style Ranaldo/Moore are a few that pop into the head), but the whole god-dang unified thing lightly rambles and shambles along with its own open-chord, strummy boldness that is really beautiful. This is- as they say- a guitarist's guitar album, but it's also a songwriter's album. You will also hear on this recording some minimal accompanying instrumentation breaking up the gaps and filling the pleasant rhythm box. It's silly and meditative at once, and it is also just so very awesome."

ADAM J. PATTERSON, BA: les mongoliens et les mutilés (2003)

CD-R

"Mixed and processed sounds, recorded between 1995 and 2003. Mongoliens et Mutilés is a CD compilation of disjointed ambience that takes you here and there in a sometimes chaotic, sometimes placid series of "experimental" sound chunks. It visits in no particular order the various vocabularies of pure noise, fake drill-n-bass, drone, and lo-fi spacey electronics, but before you can settle into each mode, it jumps to another node on the aural spectrum (sometimes within 10 or 20 seconds, and with no breaks or fades between tracks), thus resembling more of a drifting, inquisitive library record than a cohesive concept album of any sort. Maybe for listeners of Tod Dockstader, Ghostband, and any sort of strange music. Maybe."
